AUSTIN SAM'S HOGAN

BURNTWATER TRADING POST, NAVAJOLAND

I first met Austin Sam in Anchorage, Alaska in 1976.

We drove down the Alcan highway to Seattle.

The next winter I visited him at his new hogan about an hour west of Gallup, New Mexico. At that time it had a dirt floor and wood stove for heat.

Now there is electricity and propane.

Sam is a bit of an "international" personality, partly because he went around the world with the military. He also has a number of European friends who visit routinely. Sam is somewhat famous as his name appears in Tony Hillerman books, i.e. page 52 of Sacred Clowns, hardback.

LAS VEGAS

After crossing through Flagstaff in a snowstorm, I arrived in Vegas.

I had not been here in 10 years, and wanted to catch up.

I road the rollercoaster and steam-driven free fall ride at the top of the tower.
